What is something most people don’t know about the business?
Ahwatukee born and bred, Kevin Mitchell started in the construction business in 2005, with a fix and flip operation along with his parents Ben and Dean Weeks. They funded the operation and Kevin, who had graduated from ASU with a Construction Management degree, would do the remodel on the houses that they purchased. As you know when the market went south they needed a new plan. Kevin reached out to find other opportunities, and became a one-man shop handling REO/bank-owned properties. He saw it all from stolen copper and broken windows to squatters and unsafe houses. His job was to make the property FHA approvable. As Kevin successfully completed his work on time and on budget, the word got out! In 2010 there was a company known as “Two Fix It” (now known as My Guy) that Kevin reached out to and requested to be put on their list of preferred vendors. It took 9 months but he got the call and was listed with 2 other construction companies as the preferred vendor in 38 east valley zip codes.
He found himself competing against the same two companies for countless jobs, and realized that one of the reasons clients would select this other vendor was because they had a showroom. Kevin stated that the showroom was nothing spectacular, a tiny little place off the beaten path in Gilbert, and when he went to check it out he was inspired to take it one step further. Their first design center opened in 2012 and though the intent was really just to help existing clients with the visual process of selecting items for their remodel, the reality was that 50% of their business became walk up!
Even in the years when Ben and Dean stepped away from the business, and Kevin was actually operating as a one-man shop, he kept the name to lend credibility to the business. Now, years later, his brother Kyle and his sister Kayla have joined the family business as well and the Weeks and Mitchell name is truly being represented. They have multiple construction teams out on the job and pride themselves on having most of their labor pool in house. It is important to them that the work is quality and that the budget and completion times are delivered as promised. This is what sets Weeks and Mitchell apart from a lot of their competition. Transparency and follow through are key factors of their business model and this leads to many referrals and repeat clients. According to Kevin, “entrepreneurship is something you can’t learn…. you either have it or you don’t…you have to be a go-getter and put forth the long hours…it’s part of what you need to do to lay the foundation in order to get everything going.”
This is something that they have certainly continued to do. From a fix and flip business to working on bank-owned properties, to a preferred vendor list and then a showroom, the growth came from that hard work Kevin was speaking of. If you haven’t checked out the new, larger design center that they moved into last year, it is worth a look. The 1340 square foot showroom is the only one of its kind in Ahwatukee. There are four full-size kitchen replicas as well as three bathroom vignettes and 20 inlaid floor designs. They also have an in-house interior designer, Jason Miller, who can help by going through three-dimensional virtual representations of the rooms that clients are looking to remodel. This was all part of an idea to help inspire a client to move from concept to design to project. This is a one-stop shopping type of remodel. Though they don’t sell fixtures or other products out of the showroom,, they showcase and direct order from some of the top manufacturers of tile, cabinetry, and fixtures.
True community partners, Kevin and Holly Mitchell are the epitome of a local business that strives to serve Ahwatukee and to continue to beautify the community that they love.
