With gyms still closed due to the pandemic, many people have decided to try exercising in there own homes to keep themselves in shape. Some are realizing that their house currently does provide the extensive space or accommodations of the local gym. Weeks and Mitchell is here, ready and willing to help to transform your desired living space into a gym powerhouse of your very own. Below are some ideas to get you started.
As with any remodeling project, flooring is very important. With preparing a room to be used as a gym, there are a few specifications to look at. First, any flooring; carpet, tile, wood, vinyl or composites needs to be durable enough to handle any equipment and activity within the room. Second, it should provide a little bit of comfort or cushion. This ultimately can be accomplished with additional materials over or in conjunction with the main flooring such as rubberized tiles or mats. Third, it should be pleasing to the eye. Our designers not only look at durability and comfort, but also aim to provide the best overall beauty.
Of course when remodeling any room, we are looking to use the available space to its fullest potential. Obviously we need to have enough space for movement as well as equipment, To do so we look to optimized the available space that the room provides in any way. This extends beyond the 2 dimensions of “square feet” as we look at the entire volume of the room. We may be seeking to create overhead storage or floating shelves and cabinets as needed. Or even look at potential space saving elements within the walls and flooring.
If you recall being in a gym recently, you may have noticed that the walls were covered in mirrors. This is deliberate for a couple reasons. Mirrors help with motivation during workouts as well as properly placed mirrors make rooms look and feel bigger. We too would be using this strategy as we look to transform your room. Lighting is also very important for the room as it not only helps to see details within the room, but also assists with your mood and comfort. We would be looking to maximize as much of the natural light as we can, as well as look at providing the best artificial light and fixtures to provide the most pleasing illumination.
Let’s not forget the entertainment! Wall or ceiling mounted televisions, in-ceiling speakers and music systems pair perfectly in an exquisite gym atmosphere. As a result we may need to add or move electrical outlets, not only for our new entertainment pieces, but also for our plug-in exercise equipment.
Obviously this is a must have for any home gym. As we discuss what your home gym remodel will include, we will also ask what equipment you are looking to add. This will allow us to strategically layout the newly remodeled room for the best overall experience as you enjoy your new in-home gym.
