The 2020 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study calls kitchen islands the “Crown Jewel of the Kitchen”. Islands are often literally the centerpiece of the kitchen and a focal point that is desired to be upgraded in a remodel. The article states, “Storage and overhead lighting are the norm in upgraded islands (98% and 92%, respectively). Over half of islands house new appliances (52%) such as microwaves and dishwashers.” We would like to also add that among popular features of newly remodeled islands include; ovens, produce sinks, beverage refrigerators, as well as modern stovetops.
From the report; “Transitional style, followed by contemporary style, continues to lead in popularity among homeowners changing their kitchen’s style (21% and 16%, respectively). The third most popular style is new, as modern style springs forward (15%)”. The study also finds that the “farmhouse” style is loosing popularity to the aforementioned stylings. The analysis also shows the growing popularity among homeowners for larger backsplashes. These run “from the countertop all the way up to the ceiling (11%) or to the upper cabinets or range hood (63%).”
“Neutral palettes still prevail in today’s upgraded kitchens”, states the findings. Blues, especially for walls, is on the increase. With regards to flooring materials, “Hardwood returned to the No. 1 spot in flooring materials (29%), while vinyl/resilient flooring took the No. 3 spot (14%).” The other material continuing its popularity, within the kitchen, is engineered quartz. This is often the favorite in countertops and other accents including backsplashes.
